Keynote Speakers

We are honour to receive internationally distinguished Keynote Speakers with diverse backgrounds, from distinct cultural realities and different nationalities. They all have in common working with Typography to value and bridge different languages and cultures, cherishing humanity. They represent the highest level of knowledge and expertise in their specific fields.

 

 

Fiona Ross

Dr. Fiona Ross is specialized in non-Latin type design and typography, having a background in languages with a PhD in Indian Palaeography (SOAS). From 1978 to 1989 she worked for Linotype Limited (UK), with responsibility for the design of their non-Latin fonts and typesetting schemes. Since 1989 she has worked as a consultant, author, lecturer, and type designer; her recent work as a designer has been in collaboration with Tim Holloway, John Hudson and Neelakash Kshetrimayum for clients such as Ananda Bazar Patrika, Adobe, Microsoft and Harvard University Press. In 2003 Fiona joined the Department of Typography and Graphic Communication at the University of Reading (UK), where she is Associate Professor in Non-Latin Type Design (part-time) and Curator of the Department's Non-Latin Type Collection http://www.reading.ac.uk/typography/about/Staff_list/f-g-e-ross.aspx

 

 

Rui Abreu

Rui Abreu studied Communication Design at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Oporto, having graduated in 2003. He got interested in Typography during is student years and launched his first typeface in 2006. His professional experience includes work in advertising agencies and drawing fonts, publishing them on his own and with other foundries. Currently, he is dedicated entirely to his foundry R-Typography.

 

Huda AbiFarès

Dr. Huda Smitshuijzen AbiFarès is the Founding Director of the Khatt Foundation. Based in Amsterdam, her professional, cultural, and educational activities extend from the US, to Europe and the Arab World. She holds a PhD from Leiden University, an MFA from Yale University, and a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design. She is a member of AGI (Alliance Graphique Internationale). She specializes in multilingual typographic research and design, and has published several books on this topic. She currently supervises research of PhD candidates at Leiden University’s Arts Program and works as a design curator, writer, designer, and publisher.

 

 

Andreu Balius

Andreu Balius is a type designer and digital punchcutter based in Barcelona (Spain). He designs retail and custom typefaces at typerepublic.com and has been awarded with several Excellence in Type Design for his type design work. He is a member of AGI (Alliance Graphique Internationale), TDC (Type Directors Club) and ATypI (Association Typographique Internationale). He holds a PhD in Design from the University of Southampton (UK) and teaches typography and type design at EINA, University School of Design and Art, in Barcelona. Apart from his type affairs, he also loves hiking and riding on his mountain bike.

 

Rainer Erich

Scheichelbauer

Rainer Erich (‘Eric’) Scheichelbauer was born in Vienna. A trained photographer, Eric holds both a philosophy and a Dutch studies degree. He creates typefaces, works as a digital punchcutter for other type designers, and gives type design workshops on a regular basis. Since he has joined the Glyphs team in 2012, he has been writing articles, tutorials, and Python scripts, as well as the blog and the handbook. He lives and works in Vienna, where he runs his type studio Schriftlabor.
